Frantic meetings in the Casa Rosada and Olivos after the resignation of Máximo Kirchner

The day after the surprise resignation by Maximo Kirchner to the presidency of the block of the Front of All in Deputies, woke up with a frantic series of meetings. In the Casa Rosada, the chief of staff, John Manzur, held a working meeting with several of the men closest to the president Alberto Fernandez, who arrived in Balcarce 50 after 3:20 p.m., after heading another summit in Olivos, with Sergio Massa, to find a replacement for the leader of La Cámpora. Everything happens on the eve of his trip to China, Russia and Barbados.

The meeting led by Manzur brought together Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero; to the Ministers of Economy, Martín Guzmán; of Public Works, Gabriel Katopodis; Productive Development, Matías Kulfas; and Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Julián Domínguez; the Media Secretary, Valeria Zapesochny; and Communication, Juan Ross. It started at 9 and went on for almost two hours.

Guzmán’s presence was not included in the agenda sent last night, so his participation in Casa Rosada was surprising. The meeting was also scheduled for the presence of the Vice Chancellor, Cecilia Todesca, who did not attend due to having tested positive for Covid-19, and that of the Secretary for Strategic Affairs, Gustavo Beliz, who did not attend either due to indisposition.

Official sources assured THE NATION that in the meeting There was no specific discussion of what happened with Kirchner’s resignation, but reference was made to Fernández’s reaction. “It was mentioned as a passing comment,” said one of the attendees at the meeting, to reaffirm that since not all the ministers arrived at the same time, as they joined they commented on the subject “as they passed.”

“We all agree on what the President’s response was: concise, concrete and clear”, added the source, to affirm that this answer “quick” enabled “cut topic”. “It was a decision, period,” they added in official dispatches, referring to the legislator’s resignation, which opened the door to a new crisis in the government coalition.

When the meeting ended, Kulfas, Guzmán and Cafiero, three men of Fernández’s extreme confidence, stayed talking for several minutes on the esplanade that overlooks Rivadavia street. The first to leave was Kulfas, while Cafiero and Guzmán continued their talk for several more minutes.

Máximo Kirchner’s actions generated “discomfort” and “annoyance” in Albertism, which many even cataloged as “irresponsible” before THE NATION. Not a few referents opted for silence before the consultation for the decision of the vice president’s son, at the same time that they sought to highlight the figure of the President and leave behind the new episode of institutional crisis as quickly as possible. “Encapsulate it” was one of the most used words.

In reference to the content of this morning’s meeting, sources from the Executive Branch stated that much of what was discussed was related to the trip to Russia, China and Barbados, as well as that each of the portfolios that participated offered information on their activities to the Cabinet Office. “It was a work meeting, it is where you have to focus”, summed up a Cabinet official who summarized the Government’s expectations.
