Pilar Lamadrid leads the IQFoil Games in Lanzarote
With magnificent conditions, winds of 9 to 20 knots coming from land, blue sky and sun, the international circuit of the iQFoil Olympic class starts strong on the island of Lanzarote, where more than 100 sailors from more than 20 different countries battled it out in the Canarian regatta course for leading the ranking. But it seems that the winds from Lanzarote have blown in favor of the Andalusian Pilar Lamadrid, who has led during the 5 races completed. In the words of the national favorite to win this competition, although it may not seem like it, the day has been very hard. “I am very happy with this first day of racing, we have been able to do 5 tasks, there has even been more wind than we expected, although there has been a lot of fighting”, Lamadrid stated.
The Spanish sailor was very happy when she came ashore at the end of the day, because there was no one to approach her.
However, the English Emma Wilson, recently released in the iQFOIL class, has followed her closely, managing to finish second in the women’s category. “Today has been a very good day for me, I am very happy, I was nervous and excited because it was my first test with the iQfoil”Wilson commented. After the first round, the Englishwoman confessed to having relaxed and enjoyed the regatta course, which many of the competitors consider to be unique and with unparalleled conditions. “We have a long week ahead of us and a lot of racing so it will be exciting.”, affected the sailor from the United Kingdom.
On the other hand, the Netherlands is the country that leads the men’s category with Luuc van Opzeeland in the lead, followed by Huig Jan Tak. According to Opzeeland, it was a good day, with more wind than he expected. “I started strong with two second places and a third, I won the fourth regatta and I was second in the fifth”he explained. In his opinion, even if he is among the top positions all the time, in the end, “one wants to win all the regattas”. So he hopes to change that situation during the next days of competition. “I think it was good, it seems to me that I was the most consistent of the day, I am curious to see the results of the others and how the standings are coming”Opzeeland concluded.
