Dyslexia: How to detect if our children suffer from this problem to read?

The dyslexia It is a topic of conversation on social networks. Lucas Slevin, a young man of 20 years, is the protagonist of a story that he told publicly and generated empathy and debate.

Lucas recounted that he was 8 years old when his teacher asked him to read aloud at Pilar’s primary school. After that came the laughter and teasing of his companions. He began to cry and then the teacher told him: “You have a mental illness”. The child’s anguish was total. When his mother went to pick him up at school, she told him: “You don’t have any illness. Just a different way of perceiving information. It costs you a little more to read, but you are 100% capable of doing everything you want”.

That’s how Lucas found out he had dyslexia. It was not a simple process of assimilating it and the journey has been long since then. Today he is empowered and, especially in times of pandemic, he began uploading videos on TikTok and Instagram to talk about dyslexia, to inform how he perceives words when he reads and to support those who suffer the same as him. So far, he has more than 21,00 followers on Instagram.

What is dyslexia? Do you have a cure? How can we tell if a son or daughter has it? How to accompany it?

The psychologist and primary school teacher Alejandro Fernández, who specializes in learning problems, defines dyslexia as a learning disorder, in particular, a difficulty in reading in terms of accuracy and fluency. “They are readers who present many difficulties, very slow, very laborious, very laborious readings and who present marked difficulties when a low-frequency or new word from the repertoire of the language is proposed. The expert reader quickly automates that word and does not present this difficulty again in subsequent readings, people with dyslexia will always find it much more difficult”, he reports.

How do you observe at home if this problem exists? “Dyslexia is observed through a very slow reading, very imprecise. You will read wrong words. You cannot automate that fluid reading that the expert reader does and make a whole series of errors when reading”, lists the professional. “At home you can see a lot of frustration, reluctance to carry out tasks. The child notices that it is something that is difficult for him, that it refers him to situations in the classroom that generate emotional discomfort. It can even manifest as difficulties paying attention when doing homework.”

The professional, who has been working for years in the accompaniment of these difficulties, points out that many times the school does not detect it in time and the boys advance in their schooling without having been diagnosed. That is why the role of the school is fundamental.

Advice for moms and dads?Connect with the school on a regular basis, Tell him if you observe difficulties at home to see if it is the same at school. If the child does not want to do the homework, if what has to do with reading avoids or postpones it or throws tantrums when doing the homework, you have to approach the teacher and talk about how the institution sees it. Why? Because the role that cannot be delegated in the detection of this difficulty is the school, the family should not be burdened with the responsibility of detecting this difficulty, because it is a specific difficulty of the school: the school is in charge of teaching this skill and has the responsibility to detect if there are problems to find more effective methods in this regard and to guide families”.
