Cristina and Elena de Borbón, two formulas to announce a separation

San Juan de Puerto Rico

The Infanta Cristina and Iñaki Urdangarin have decided
“by mutual agreement, interrupt their marital relationship”
after it became known last week that he has been sharing his life with another woman for months.

“By mutual agreement, we have decided to end our marriage relationship. The commitment to our children remains intact. Since it is a private decision, we ask for the utmost respect from all those around us, ”says the statement signed by Cristina de Borbón and Iñaki Urdangarin, released by the Efe agency.

It is an official statement that has nothing to do with the Palacio de la Zarzuela. By Royal Decree of 1987, The Royal Family is made up of Don Felipe and Doña Letizia with their daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, together with Kings Juan Carlos I and Sofía.

Thus, when Felipe VI was proclaimed King in 2014, the Infantas Elena and Cristina de Borbón automatically retained their status as relatives of the King, but they were no longer part of the Royal Family.

For this reason, now the House of His Majesty the King has not released this statement from the Infanta Cristina and Iñaki Urdangarin, although the announcement coincided with the King’s visit to San Juan de Puerto Rico, where it is scheduled to arrive eleven at night, Spanish time. Nor is it expected that during his trip he will show any reaction in this regard. Neither of the Zarzuela, because it is a strictly private matter of a family that is not that of Don Felipe and Doña Letizia.

The formula that the Infanta Cristina and Urdangarin have used – “interrupt their marital relationship” – is reminiscent of the one used by the Infanta Elena and Jaime de Marichalar –“temporary cessation of conjugal cohabitation»- on November 13, 2007. In this case, it was the Royal House that announced the separation because Felipe VI was still Prince of Asturias and, therefore, the Duchess of Lugo was still a member of the Royal Family. The divorce of Elena de Borbón and Marichalar came in January 2010, so perhaps the statement issued today is the step prior to divorce.
