Of the 450,000 hectares of olive groves in Castilla-La Mancha, 76,000 are organic (more than 20 percent), which places the region as the largest producer of extra virgin olive oil in this category. The community is also the second world producer of oil, with a forecast for this campaign of between 100,000 and 110,000 tons of extra virgin olive oil, according to the statement released by the Board.

The Minister of Agriculture, Water and Rural Development, Francisco Martínez Arroyo, stressed that the current campaign is being very positive, in a sector in which there are 83,000 olive growers and 265 companies, mostly cooperatives. Likewise, he recalled that the Board has given a boost to quality figures, since protected designations of origin and geographical indications are protected under the ‘Campo y Alma’ guarantee mark.

On the other hand, the minister stated that the agri-food sector already represents 17.1 percent of the region’s gross domestic product, thanks to companies “which are the ones that make it possible for our peoples to have a future.” Martínez Arroyo accompanied Page on a visit to the family oil mill ‘Aceites Delgado’, in Loranca de Tajuña, one of the four that make up the Alcarria Denomination of Origin and which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year.
