An American Airlines plane flew from miami to london turned around midway after a passenger refused to wear a mask, the airline said in a statement on Thursday.
“American Airlines Flight 38, from Miami and London, circled Miami due to a customer refusing the federal requirement to wear a mask,” American Airlines said in a statement to AFP.
The Boeing 777, which was carrying 129 passengers and 14 crew members, was met on its return to Florida by Miami police.
“Once the plane arrived at the gate, the passenger was escorted (by police) without incident,” authorities told CNN.
American Airlines, for its part, specified that the client involved in this incident was put on the “internal reject list” of the company and will conduct an investigation of the incident.
The civil aviation regulator, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), declared in January 2021 a zero tolerance policy towards passengers who refuse to wear a mask.
On-board personnel have reported a significant number of cases of verbal or physical violence from travelers who are not satisfied with the measure.
