What does the purchase of Activision Blizzard for Xbox Game Pass imply

Finally, Microsoft agreed to buy Activision Blizzard and will become the third largest company in the industry in terms of profit, behind Tencent and Sony. What does this mean for Xbox Game Pass?

The information that had been circulating in the last few hours was officially confirmed. For the figure of 68,700 million dollars, Microsoft stays with Activision Blizzard, company that created Call of Duty Y Overwatch, among others.

Added to the more than 10,000 employees, the purchase moves more than thirty internal studios that are part of the company, as is the case with Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games, King or Blizzard Entertainment. This notably affects the number of games that will be part of Game Pass, the Xbox service that enables the use of a hundred video games for a monthly payment. In Argentina it has a price of 599 pesos, with a first month bonus of 39 pesos if you use it on console.

The news comes in a context of positive numbers regarding service subscribers. In January 2022, Game Pass reached 25 million users, 7 million more than it had a year ago.

According to the analysis carried out by the specialized site Meristation, this could lead to different scenarios for users.

By having a different quantity and quality of titles, players could face a price increase for the service. Another possibility is that segmentation begins and plans emerge with different costs depending on what is offered in each of the options, such as streaming services with the number of simultaneous screens for each user.

The question does not stop there, considering that Microsoft also has Game Pass for PC gamers. With that huge user base and the possibilities that the new purchase grants, the company is facing a very favorable scenario to prevail in the market.

Either way, they expect the Activision Blizzard operation to be completed in fiscal year 2023, since it still needs to be approved by the corresponding authorities.

Phil Spencer then responds as CEO of Microsoft Gaming, which will encompass Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda Softworks (which it bought last year, adding at least 20 classic titles to the offering) and the new acquisition.

As far as Activision Blizzard authorities are concerned, Bobby Kotick will remain CEO and from now on he will answer to Spencer, despite all the scandal he faced in recent days.

In July 2021, the California Department of Fair Employment had sued the company for a series of cases of sexual harassment and discrimination.

As a result of this complaint, an internal investigation was carried out in which 37 employees were dismissed and 44 received disciplinary sanctions. Although the number was whitewashed by a company representative, it was learned that Kotick tried to hide it.

According to information revealed by the Wall Street Journal, the figures were to be released in an official report to be revealed before Christmas. But nevertheless, the CEO pushed to omit that data, assuring that it would enlarge the magnitude and would only bring more problems to the company.
