Ciryl Gane faces Francis Ngannou for the UFC heavyweight title: “I see him trying to take me down”
Most professional athletes end their careers without being able to achieve the ultimate goal. It is not strange, losing or falling by the wayside is part of life. But others, however, seem to be touched by a magic wand. Cyryl Gane is one of them.. The French mixed martial artist has achieved, in just three and a half years, a chance to become the UFC heavyweight champion.
Gane enters his fight against Francis Ngannou, current champion and former teammate, with an undefeated record in all disciplines where he has fought – 14-0 in Muay Thai and 10-0 in mixed martial arts (MMA). The Frenchman has a spectacular striking formation on the feet, but he will face the most fearsome puncher in the division.
The fight is, a priori, very even. There is a risk of losing your undefeated record.
«I have no fear or pressure to lose my undefeatedor. Because it is true that in the competition I have not lost any, but in the gym I have lost many times. I have very good wrestling sparring partners and other combat modalities and I know what it’s like to lose,” the French fighter tells ABC exclusively.
Gane became the interim champion on August 7, 2021 after defeating Derrick Lewis by TKO. Previously, he had won a five-round unanimous decision over Aleksander Volkov and Jairzinho Rozenstruik, a sign that he knows how to take fights intelligently from long distance. Ngannou (16-3), for his part, will put his title on the line for the first time.
Does Gane think the Cameroonian will want to avoid the fight on the feet? “Yes, it is very possible. I don’t know exactly what he’s going to do, but it’s an option. I can see Francis Ngannou trying to catch me and take me to the ground And I’ll be ready for it. I will certainly be prepared for it. It is a great question, ”says Gane to this newspaper.
On the horizon is the opportunity to be crowned ‘the most dangerous man on the planet’. Gane and Ngannou met several years ago at the MMA Factory in Paris. They are no longer related. And they will have to close a chapter this Saturday at UFC 270. There will also be Brandon Moreno defending his belt against Deiveson Figueiro and even the Hispanic-Georgian Ilia Topuria, who will face Charles Jourdain.
