MXI 2019, the wine from Bodegas Tinto Pesquera that wants to win back the youth of Ribera del Duero

When in 1011 Count Sancho García reached an agreement with Caliph Suleymán al-Mustain whereby, in exchange for his help in achieving the Caliphate of Córdoba, he undertook to return to Castile outstanding fortresses – such as Clunia, Osma, Gormaz and San Esteban de Gormaz- which had been taken years before by Almanzor, would never have imagined that this important fact for the Reconquest would become a wine. And not in any one, but in a whole symbol of the Ribera del Duero, the land of this Castilian count.

This wine, the MXI 2019, which also owes its name to the two plots -10 and 11- where the vineyards from which the grapes come from are located on the estate of the
Bodegas Tinto Pesquera
, has become a revolution for the wine project of the Fernandez Rivera family.

This is the third vintage of this 100% Tempranillo red wine aged for 14 months in different aging formats and consolidates, with its release on the market, the third generation of the winery, made up of Inés Bocos Fernández, Elvira Bocos Fernández, Lucía Pascual Fernández and Ángela Pascual Fernández.

After a careful selection in the vineyards located at 900 meters of altitude, in the Monte Alto de Pesquera and with a sandy loam soil within Fishing of the Duero (Valladolid), the Tempranillo berries with which this wine is made remain in the cellar for 14 months in different aging formats, with aging in wooden vats and concrete tanks. This is how the winery’s oenologist explains it, Rodrigo Pons Morente, who points out that the Fernández Rivera Family has the objective of “seeking the greatest potential of the vineyards.”

Rodrigo Pons Morente recalls that the harvest year of the grapes with which the MXI 2019 was made began with a normal winter, which gave way to a mild spring, with some frost in the month of May, although the year, in general, It was dry, especially during the vegetative cycle, something that has marked the development of the plants, the size of the clusters and the grapes. «The temperature regime during the maturation period of that vintage was very favorable, with the marked thermal amplitude characteristic of the Ribera del Duero, which has made possible the magnificent phenolic maturity of the maturation, which has not affected the quality of the the grape”, says the winery’s oenologist.

As regards the tasting note of the MXI 2019 wine, this red wine has a clean and bright appearance, with a cherry red color, violet hue and purple reflections, which indicate youth, like the consuming public to which it is directed, as they are young people, as stated by the commercial director of Familia Fernández Rivera, Antonio Barrios Fayula. On the nose, it presents a medium-high aromatic intensity, reminiscent of red fruits such as raspberry and currant. As for its consumption, the latest wine from Bodegas Tinto Pesquera is optimal from the moment of purchase.

With an approximate price of 25 euros, this wine “has more demand than supply”, since the number of bottles produced by Bodegas Tinto Pesquera “will be sold out in a few months”, explains the commercial director. This is due, among other things, to the fact that the winery has a good portfolio of clients in several countries and is found on several lines of large commercial surfaces in Spain and abroad.

With an alcohol content of 14%, the MXI 2019 is served in a glass at a temperature of between 12 and 14 ºC and is ideal to accompany rice dishes, risotto, pasta, grilled meat and chops with vine shoots. In short, this wine, whose first vintage was born in 2016 as a new project of the Fernández Rivera family, is a fresh wine made with dedication, love and respect for the land, and welcomes new generations. Long life to him.
