Microsoft wants to dominate the video game market. The American technology company has just announced the purchase of Activision Blizzard -the company behind franchises such as Call of Duty, Diablo, Candy Crush, Overwatch, Spyro or War of Warcraft- for $68.7 billion (60,360 million euros). The move, the largest in video game history, comes just over a year after Xbox’s parent company took control of Bethesda and the rest of the studios that made up ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion. Behind this acquisition policy is Microsoft’s growing interest in strengthening its presence in the video game market, as it has recognized in the
release
in which you have informed about the agreement.

“Gaming is the most dynamic and exciting category of entertainment on all platforms today and will play a key role in the development of metaverse platforms,” said Satya Nadella, president and CEO of Microsoft. “We are investing deeply in world-class content, community, and the cloud to usher in a new era of gaming that puts players and creators first and makes gaming safe, inclusive, and accessible to all.”

Although the agreement is complete, it will still be necessary to wait for the completion of the regulatory review and the approval of the shareholders of Activision Blizzard so that the purchase is definitively closed. From American technology they expect this to happen during the fiscal year of 2023.

On the other hand, Microsoft has decided that, at least for now, Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, remains at the helm of the company. Be that as it may, at the time the purchase is completed, all decisions will have to be previously approved by the head of Microsoft’s video game division, Phil Spencer.

The Game Pass is going strong

Indeed, the main objective behind the movement is to enhance Microsoft’s position in the video game market. Whether for ‘smartphones’, consoles or computer. According to the company, the acquisition of Activision Blizzard will allow them to occupy the third position in income within the industry, only behind China’s Tencent and Sony, the parent company of PlayStation.

The purchase of Activision It will also strengthen its video game platforms by subscription, Game Pass, and in the cloud, xCloud, with titles belonging to the company. “We will offer as many Activision Blizzard games as we can within Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, both new titles and games from the incredible catalog of Activision Blizzard,” said Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s video games division, referring to the company plans.

Obviously, the acquisition of the study will allow the company to turn sagas like Call of Duty u Overwatch exclusively on their Xbox consoles and computers. This implies that in the future these titles may not be available for competitor systems, as is the case with PlayStation machines.

Currently, Xbox is especially focused on increasing the number of users who use its services. Its Game Pass -which works like a kind of Netflix of video games- today has more than 25 million players. Without a doubt, the purchase of Activision will allow this number to increase considerably in the future. Especially if the policy is maintained that allows the ‘gamer’ to access video games from the day of launch without having to pay a single euro beyond the monthly subscription to the platform, which is around 10 euros.
