How are curtains that absorb sound?
The Swedish multinational Ikea, which has recently been betting on smart home devices, added to its catalog an ideal product for those who live immersed in the chaos of the city and are victims of noise pollution.
Until now, the main solution to bothersome noise from home or from outside was earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones. Faced with this problem, Ikea designed a product that helps to achieve a quieter environment and that is postulated as a much cheaper option than placing double glass in the windows.
Is about Gunnlaug curtains, capable of dampening and absorbing sound. In addition to decorating the house, they isolate the space from the most uncomfortable domestic noises. According to the furniture company, they are sold in two units, measuring three meters long and 1.45 meters wide and covering a total area of 4.63 square meters.
The total weight of the fabrics is 1.20 kilos and, according to the company, the product is ISO 354 certified, an official standard that measures and verifies the sound-absorbing capabilities of “materials used as wall or ceiling treatments.”
The curtain is made of chenille yarn. The material and the way in which the fabric is braided cause it to absorb sound, dampen echo or reverberation “of medium and high frequency waves, such as the sound of dishes or cutlery,” according to the company. . Specifically, ISO certification allows the firm to guarantee that the product absorbs between 50% and 100% more noise than similar fabrics.
Curtains, like most, also filter light and They can be hung either from a bar or from a rail. From Ikea they point out that, to obtain a better result in terms of sound absorption, the folds should be formed 9 to 15 centimeters from the wall.
The price published on the brand’s official website is US$69. “The Gunnlaug curtain is very versatile. In addition to being stylish, it filters light and muffles the noise caused by daily activities such as washing the dishes, putting the cutlery on the table or dragging the chairs”, says Ikea.
It is not the first time that the company has decided to innovate by using curtains as the element of the house to do so. In 2019, for example, Ikea added to its catalog some with the capacity to purify the air and eliminate bad odors from the home.
