Cloud of smoke in Pinamar: how long will the phenomenon last and why it could be repeated

PINAMAR (Special envoy).- Young people, adults and entire families enjoyed the beaches of Pinamar this noon when the sky darkened to the point of seeming night. “Fog”, “mist” and “fog” were some of the definitions that tourists risked to explain what was happening. However, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) confirmed to THE NATION that the origin of the black cloud that covered the city was different: smoke.

Before the consultation of this medium about the phenomenon that took tourists by surprise, Cindy Fernández, who works for the agency, is not startled. “It was part of the smoke forecast made from the fires that were active yesterday afternoon”, Explain.

According to data from the SMN, which analyzes the trajectory of the clouds through satellites, there are so many foci that are recorded in the center and north of Argentina that between today and tomorrow most of the provinces could be affected in their visibility: from Catamarca to the Mesopotamian region and from the latter to jurisdictions such as Chubut, Neuquén and Río Negro.

The forecast included, of course, the province of Buenos Aires, where the possibility of the presence of “light to moderately cloudy” smoke was anticipated in the coastal area due to the winds coming from the north.

Regarding the duration of the phenomenon in the region, where after 4 p.m. the sky was much clearer, Fernández explained: “At night and during the early morning the wind will change to the south, so cleaner air will enter.”

However, he warned that depending on the fires that are currently active and others that may occur in the coming hours, it is possible that a new cloud will enter the spa area in the coming days. “As long as there are active foci, when there is a wind circulation again from the north or northwest, the smoke will enter again”, he indicated.

Among the fire sources highlighted by the SMN are those of the Paraná and Formosa Delta, but the claims are far from being limited to these regions. The provinces of Catamarca, Chubut, Buenos Aires, Río Negro, San Luis, Santa Fe, Salta, Formosa and Mendoza today registered active foci of forest fires, according to the National Fire Management Service (SNMF).

According to the agency, in Buenos Aires The outbreaks in the departments of Zárate and General Alvarado were still active this morning, while the fire could be extinguished in Ezeiza, Villarino and the Ciervo de los Pantanos National Park, in Campana.
