The CGPJ rejects by a large majority the report that endorsed the Government’s Housing Law

The Government of PSOE and United We Can (UP) will have to wait to approve for the second time in the Council of Ministers its preliminary draft of Law for the Right to Housing, with which it intends to control property prices in areas where they have been most stressed, among other measures.

The Executive intended to ratify it next Tuesday in the Council of Ministers after the mandatory, although not binding, report of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ). And, according to what had transpired in recent days, it seemed that this CGPJ report was going to be favorable in general terms, according to the draft prepared by its rapporteur and former PSOE deputy, Álvaro Cuesta.

Said proposal endorsed the main lines of this legal initiative of the PSOE-UP Government, although it pointed out some aspects to be corrected, especially in the regulation of rental prices.

and mortgages in areas with more expensive homes.

But today the plenary session of the CGPJ has analyzed that report proposal and the result has been convincing: it decides to reject it by 15 votes to 6 and changes the rapporteur, commissioning a new report from the members José Antonio Ballestero and Enrique Lucas, which will be analyzed in another meeting on the 27th.

A) Yes, the Government will have to wait at least until the end of the month, because it cannot approve the preliminary project before the CGPJ pronounces itself. And, in addition, the possibility is opened that the meaning of the new report is different or not as favorable to the Government’s law as the one that Álvaro Cuesta had prepared.
