ATP Cup: Federico Delbonis could not face an enthusiastic Kamil Majchrzak and now Argentina’s qualification for the semifinals is in jeopardy
On Wednesday morning in Sydney, Tuesday night in Argentina, Federico Delbonis, 44th in the ranking, had a disappointing performance and Argentina’s qualification for the ATP Cup semi-finals was at serious risk. Azul’s left-hander lost by 6-3 and 7-6 (7-3) against the Polish Kamil Majchrzak, 117th and 25 years old, the first match of the last day of group D of the tournament that is a prelude to the Australian Open, which will begin on the night of January 16 for America.
Delbonis was erratic, without confidence, and was overtaken by the Pole, electric when he launched the crossed two-handed backhand. The former Davis Cup champion must have dominated the development due to his experience and his ability to react, but he was tied up, defensively, always in the shadow of Majchrzak.
Later, Diego Schwartzman, 13th, will face the dangerous Hubert Hurkacz, 9th, to tie the series. And then the doubles will unfold. The Argentina needs to win both games to reach the next stage, as only the first in the zone will advance to the semifinals. The team led by Alejandro Fabbri, one of Schwartzman’s coaches, won their series against Georgia and Greece, as did Poland.
The group stage runs until January 6, Australia, and on Friday 7, in the first semi-final, the winner of group A will meet the winner of D. The second semi-final will be on Saturday 8, among the winners of the zones B and C. And the final will take place on Sunday 9. So far, Spain leads group A, Russia is the leader of B and there is total uncertainty between the United States, Great Britain, Germany and Canada in C.
The criteria for defining each group are the following: number of series obtained, number of matches won, average of sets and average of games. In case of equality in all these aspects, the confrontation between the matched sets is taken into account.
Long hours before Alexander Zverev, world number 3, led the Germany’s victory over the United States, Y Italians Janik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini they eliminated france. “It was a good level for the second game of the year, high intensity and hard blows,” said Zverev, who won 6-4, 6-4 at Taylor Fritz and he’s a natural candidate to win the Australian Open in Melbourne.
