The Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) has quickly resolved the crisis of government caused by the chain abandonment of all the men of Sebastian Kurz, after the ex-chancellor announced yesterday that he is leaving the leadership of the party and political life.

The hitherto Minister of the Interior, Karl Nehammer, has been appointed as the new leader of the formation and new federal chancellor, a position that will still have to be confirmed by the federal president, Alexander van der Bellen. Nehammer has been unanimously elected by the party leadership, meeting this morning urgently. Alexander Schallenberg, who had assumed that position in mid-October after Kurz’s resignation as head of government amid corruption allegations, also resigned by surprise last night and the position is thus filled again.

In his first speech after knowing his appointment, Nehammer has assured that his intention is to maintain the ÖVP line within the government coalition that he has led with Los Verdes since January 2020. He has mentioned the strict policy on immigration and the tax reform ongoing, to reduce the tax burden on those who earn the least, as examples of continuity, in addition to and continue with the plans to fight climate change. In his first statement, he also endorsed the Austrian strategy against the pandemic, which includes mandatory vaccination from February.

Nehammer has advanced, on the other hand, that Schallenberg will once again occupy the post of Foreign Minister, the portfolio he had held until October when he assumed the Federal Chancellery. The vacancies in the cabinet of ministers have been filled, moreover, in a chain. Martin Polaschek, Rector of the University of Graz, becomes Minister of Education. Magnus Brunner will head the finance department, Gerhard Karner becomes Minister of the Interior and Claudia Plakolm becomes Secretary of the Federal Chancellery.
