Heavy rain about to meet the La Palma volcano
As of this Thursday, a frontal structure associated with an Atlantic low (not named due to low potential) will visit the Canary Islands and leave widespread and even persistent rainfall in certain regions.
Because of that, lThe State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated yellow warnings for rains, throughout the day, on the eastern slope of the island of La Palma (contrary to the area of the volcanic eruption of Cumbre Vieja), metropolitan area of Santa Cruz and east of Tenerife, where they are expected to accumulate around 60 liters per square meter of rain in 12 hours. In the rest of the islands of greater relief (in El Hierro, La Gomera and Gran Canaria) the rains will be weak, extending in the afternoon to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
On Friday the situation will get complicated even more due to the displacement of the storm to the east of its initial position. In this new location, the storm will interact with a flow of humid and warm air of subtropical origin, which will provide it with enough energy to reactivate it. The union of these two air masses of different temperatures will lead to an increase in atmospheric instability., which will result in more intense and persistent rainfall, carrying with it the possibility of small electrical storms in the archipelago.
That is why the AEMET reactivates yellow notices for rain for this Friday but this time, extending it to the entire archipelago without distinction of slopes. Rainfall will increase in intensity as the day progresses, being more significant in El Hierro and on La Palma (also in the area of the eruption), where it is expected that they will again receive accumulated 60 l / m2 in 12 hours.
All of this is accompanied by a general drop in temperatures which can reach up to 5 ºC, mainly in interior areas. This drop in temperatures will be the one that propitiates, if the prediction is fulfilled, the first snow of the season, with snow on Mount Teide from an altitude of 2400 meters on Friday and Saturday at the summit of La Palma.
Concern on La Palma
The large accumulations of rain announced for Friday place, once again, La Palma in the spotlight. The main concern is with the area of the eruption, where the accumulation of materials could gain weight and become a potential danger to the population and infrastructures.
Alert on La Palma: volcano, rains and maybe lahars. And follow the snow
Given this, scientists are already taking additional measures and warning the population moving away from unstable slopes and slopes due to large shifts of ash and runoff that can be caused by rains.
