The Vikings were already present in America exactly 1,000 years ago

In the 1960s, Norwegian archaeologists Helge Ingstad and Anne Stine Ingstad discovered the remains of a human settlement at the site of L’Anse-aux-Meadows in the northern peninsula of Terranova, Canada, which belonged to the Nordics. It was the first and only known and confirmed record that the Vikings had crossed the ocean from Europe to America.

We knew that one of those cosmic ray events occurred in the year 993, so we tried to locate this same increase in the growth rings of Viking wood remains.

Although the Viking age lasted from the 8th to the 11th century, the age of the archaeological site on the American continent remained to be determined. A new study, published in the journal Nature, has managed to date by radiocarbon at year 1021 after Christ the wood from which the remains found were made and which are attributable to the Nordics.

“Our approach is very new and is based on some recent developments in radiocarbon science,” they tell SINC. Michael Dee and Margot Kuitems, from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and co-authors of the work, who had already used the procedure in another study. “The dating method is accurate to the exact year,” the researchers conclude.

The technique is based on detecting in the trees that were cut down to make these wooden objects the sudden increases in radiocarbon levels in the atmosphere created by the massive solar storms From the past.

“This increase is absorbed by the trees and is incorporated into the growth ring of that year. We knew that one of those cosmic ray events occurred in the year 993So we tried to locate this same increase in the growth rings of the Viking wood debris, ”Dee explains.

Once that 993 landmark was located, “all we needed to do was count the tree rings to the edge to determine what the last year of growth was,” Kuitems continues. The results also show that the three wooden artifacts came from different trees of at least two different species of spruce.

The authors thus affirm that the date of 1021 establishes a new basis for European knowledge of America.

First crossing of the Atlantic

The contraptions were found in the Nordic strata of the Canadian site near other tools attributable to the Nordics, but they also featured crop marks and clean surfaces that could only have been made by metal sheets. “The indigenous people of the region at that time did not make metal, but the Vikings did,” the scientists tell SINC.

Is it possible that the Spanish already knew of the existence of lands on the other side of the Atlantic before Columbus set sail?

Michael Dee and Margot Kuitems

By confirming the Viking membership and the age of the settlement, the study raises some questions, which currently cannot be answered. “Were they there longer? Did they come back many times? Or was this year 1021 – the only year produced by our three samples – the only year the Vikings were there? ”Say the authors.

On the other hand, when on October 12, 1492 the Spanish expedition directed by Christopher Columbus arrived on the island of Guanahaní, later baptized as San Salvador, few imagined that in reality, another people, the Vikings, had already set foot in America a few centuries before. Or if.

“To what extent was it extended in the medieval Europe this knowledge of the Americas? Is it possible that the Spanish already knew of the existence of lands on the other side of the Atlantic even before Columbus set sail? ”Dee and Kuitems question. In any case, the Nordic settlement is 471 years ahead of the arrival of Columbus.

According to scientists, research is an important landmark in the entire history of mankind. “This is the first evidence of the crossing of the Atlantic, and this ocean was the last part of the Earth that was not crossed by humans since we emigrated from Africa!”, They conclude.
